4 Ways to Fix Your Clogged Toilet Without a Plunger

clogged toilet Abilene, TX

A clogged toilet happens to the best of us. Whether it happens by accidentally using too much toilet paper or a child trying to flush toys down the bowl, the occasional toilet clogging seems inevitable. However, not everyone finds themselves on the prepared side when it happens.

What happens when you do not have a plunger on hand? Dealing with a clogged toilet is an unexpected curveball in your day. If you do not have a plunger, make it easier on yourself with these four tips.

Keep in mind if the toilet is too full, try removing as much water as possible before trying these tricks.

Four ways to fix a clogged toilet without a plunger

Hot water with dish soap

This is a simple solution that utilizes materials readily available in most households. The first step in unclogging a toilet without the traditional plunger is reaching for the dish soap. The slippery soap acts as a sort of lubricant for whatever is stuck deep in the pipe. A half cup of dish soap poured directly into the toilet water with a flush should help dislodge the obstruction.

If dish soap does not work alone, mixing it with hot water can help move things along. Fill a bucket with hot bath water and half a cup of dish soap. Standing over the bowl, pour the mixture in at waist level. The force of the water entering the toilet could push the clog onward.

Make sure not to use boiling water, as extreme heat has the potential to crack a porcelain toilet.

Baking soda and vinegar

If you do not have dish soap readily available, this mixture can do the trick. This fizzling combination has a similar effect as soap, acting as a lubricant to help the obstruction slide freely into the pipes.

Fix your clogged toilet with this natural solution: Mix 1 cup of baking soda with 2 cups of vinegar directly into the toilet bowl. Let the mixture sit for 30 minutes to fully settle into the water. If this does not work, use the hot water trick.

Plastic bottle method

Unfortunately, the plastic bottle method can get a bit messy. Rubber cleaning gloves are recommended for this method. Drain as much water as you can from the bowl, using a bucket and cup to scoop the water. The next step is finding a large plastic bottle and filling it with hot water. Placing your thumb over the top of the bottle, put the top end into the toilet hole. Upon removing your thumb, squeeze the bottle to shoot the hot water into the toilet. This pressure change should dislodge anything stuck in the pipe.

Drain snake DIY

If you don’t have a plunger on hand, there is a good chance you might not have a drain snake either. If none of the above tips have worked, the clog is more involved. It may require some tougher methods to dislodge.

You can make a DIY drain snake using a wire hanger. Start by unraveling the hanger until it is straight. Push one end of the uncoiled hanger into the toilet and through the pipe. Complete this motion, moving the wire around and back and forth until the clog comes apart, sliding freely down the pipes again.
