Slab Leak Repair: How to Tell You Have a Slab Leak
Slab leak repair is something that every homeowner dreads to handle. While slab leaks are typically rare, they can still occur in certain situations. However, being aware of when you have a slab leak may quicken the process of repair.
Repairing a slab leak is mostly only done by a professional, but that does not mean that a homeowner should not be able to tell when one is present. In this article, we discuss slab leak repair and how to tell if you need one.
Before understanding what to look out for in regards to a slab leak, it is first important to understand what exactly a slab leak is. This is actually just a fancy way for saying that there is a leak below the foundation of the home. Beneath the concrete foundation of each house are copper water lines, and within those lines is where a slab leak can occur.
Both the pressure and drainage side of the foundation can experience a slab leak. These types of leaks can cause long-term damage, which is why it is so important to know what to look out for, especially if you own your home.
How to tell that there is a slab leak
While most professionals can tell that there is a slab leak instantly, not everyone is able to. The following signs can be an indication that there is a leak present and that repair is needed.
Increased water bill
Most water bills tend to stay the same so long as the household size does too. However, when there is a slab leak, the water bill may shoot up because additional water may be leaking, thus causing an increase in price each month.
Damp flooring or carpeting
One way to tell that you have a slab leak is to feel if the carpets or floors are damp. When a slab leaks, water will disperse, which usually causes the flooring within base-level homes to be damp or even wet, in some cases. Wet or damp floors can do damage to the foundation of the home if not repaired. Mold can grow or insects may be attracted.
If there are areas on the floors where it is softer or uneven, then this may indicate that there is a significant slab leak. A shifting foundation can be dangerous because the grounds are uneven. When a slab leaks, certain areas beneath the foundation may condense, which can be problematic later on.
